  • It is character vs. character because, the taxi driver is pointing at Mahmoud. "Mahmoud started at the gun pointed at him. Was this real, or was he still asleep and having a nightmare?"(pg.247)
  • Character vs. Society
  • This is character vs. self because he is trying to do something. "No! Josef cried. He had to do something. He leaped to his feet, grabbed the arm of one of the men carrying his father, and tried to pull him off." He is trying to tell himself to help his dad.
  • It is character vs. nature because it is the ocean against the people. "And they were pulled back in by the tanker's massive draw. Their little blue boat spun sideways, and they zoomed toward the big ship's prow."(pg.118)
  • This is character vs. society because, Isabel is trying to convince the police that her dad doesn't deserve it. "The policeman raised his truncheon to hit her father again, and Isabel jumped between them. No! Don't! Please!" (pg.28) They are at a rite.
