In Chapter 6 page 92, a Contrast and Contradiction occurs. As Ponyboy is trying to rescue kids, he takes a look at Johnny's face. Johnny doesn't usually smile especially in these types of situations. He looked like he was having fun."Johnny wasn't behaving like himself.....That was the only time I can think of when I saw him without that defeated,suspicious look in his eyes.
Why do I fight?
On Chapter 5 page 74, an again and again occurs. When Ponyboy and Johnny are sleeping in the church. They start to remember that things happen very quickly. Ponyboy states"Last night...just last night we were walkin' Cherry and Marcia over to Two-Bit's. Just last night we were layin' in the lot,lookin' up at the stars and dreaming...." Ponyboy repeats the words "Just last night." They can't believe that all of a sudden they are "criminals."
Why do I fight?
On chapter 9 page 137, a tough question sign post occurs. Before going to the rumble, Ponyboy decides to take a quick survey. He asks his friends why they fight. Then, he asks himself, "Why do I fight?I thought, and couldn't think of any real good reason. There isn't any real good reason. There isn't any real good reason for fighting except self-defense." Ponyboy struggles to answer this question. He doesn't have a good reason for fighting.
On Chapter 10 page 152, an AHA Moment occurs. After Johnny dies, Dallas leaves the hospital. Ponyboy starts to wonder why Dally could take Johnny's death but Dally couldn't. Ponyboy soon realizes that Johnny was the only thing that Dally had loved. Ponyboy says," Why Can I take it when Dally can't? And then I knew. Johnny was the only thing Dally loved. And now Johnny was gone.
