Storyboard Text

  • Sodium carbonate, also known as soda ash is being used for the neutralization.
  • H2SO4(aq) + Na2CO3(aq) = ?
  • Na2CO3? Well I didn't know carbonates can be used for neutralization...
  • Remember it also produces CO2. And Na2SO4 is used to create glass and detergents.
  • H2SO4(aq) + Na2CO3(aq) = H2O(l) + CO2(g) + Na2SO4(aq)
  • I suppose SO4 replaces CO3, so that produces sodium sulfate! Wow!
  • It's actually quite dangerous. If you inhale Na2CO3, you could have difficulties with breathing. It could also burn and damage your eyes permanently.
  • But Tim, aren't does chemical dangerous or harmful to people?
  • Well, you just have to handle safely, and that's why you should always check MSDS. But for Na2CO3, it is often naturally found in water and soil, so there is not much of environmental impact.
  • How about Na2SO4? Like I often see it used as a medicine.
  • Then why do people use it if it's dangerous?
  • It's still dangerous depending on how you use it. Like exposures could irritate your skin or lungs. As well, If it gets disposed to the drain, it could be toxic for marine animals.
  • Wow, so many chemicals are often dangerous, but you basically just have to take care of it properly.
  • You're right! So just make sure to handle safely if you see any of these chemicals!
  • You're welcome!
  • The End
  • I learned so much from just from the process of how batteries are recycled! Chemicals does effect our everyday life a lot! Thanks Tim!
