Chris McCandless has started the first phase of his journey into the wilderness as he leaves Carthage and heads for Denali National Park. This comic strip will summarize pages 157-168 from Into The Wild.
He is later picked up by an RV deliveryman named Gaylord Stuckey. This man takes him all the way to Denali National Park. Before dropping him off, Stuckey "begged and pleaded with him to call his parents. I can't imagine anything worse than having a son out there and not knowing where he's at for years and years, not knowing whether he's living or dead. "Here's my credit card number" I told him." Stuckey's tone reveals that he is worrying about McCandless and is willing to do a lot to help him survive. His repetition of begging expresses these feelings.
As McCandless has finally reached his goal of escaping civilization, in great joy he writes down "I am reborn. This is my dawn. Real life has just begun. Deliberate living: Conscious attention to the basics of life, and a constant attention to your immediate environment and its concerns, example, A job, a task, a book; anything requiring efficient concentration." this reveals a tone of McCandless' depression and hatred of society. He uses diction to explain this.
