Storyboard Text

  • Don't be sad Emma! Let's go to the grocery store and stock up on food
  • MOM! There's no food & I'm hungry after practice!
  • I brought a shopping list to know what food to buy.
  • Good thinking!
  • Emma, we need two carts.
  • It's because there is no force acting on them. An object at rest will stay at rest. This is known as Newton's First Law of Motion.
  • Ok, how do the carts stay in place even though they have wheels?
  • Mom, wait up! Your cart goes so much faster than my cart!
  • That is Newton's Second Law of Motion. Since our carts have the same mass but I have a bigger mass than you, I provide a bigger force on the cart than you do, which makes it go faster.
  • You just provided an example of Newton's Third & final Law of Motion. That is that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The cart banged into you & you banged into the cart.
  • Ow! I tried to make a sudden stop and the cart crashed into me while I moved forward & banged into the cart at the same time!
  • Your total is $126.48
  • Emma & her mom buy their food at the checkout after getting everything.
