Storyboard Text

  • Hello, my name is Sir Frederick William Herschel and I discovered Infrared radiation. Heres How I did it.
  • Here I am going to conduct an experiment where I am going to direct sunlight onto the prism to split light into the spectrum of colors, then I measured a the temperature of a thermometer which was illuminated by each color.
  • I was surprised to find that the temperature increased from the blue to the red end of the visible spectrum. After noticing this pattern, I decided to measure the temperature just beyond the red portion of the spectrum. This region had the highest temperature of all. I realized that there must be another type of light beyond the red, which we cannot see.
  • I performed additional experiments on the rays beyond the red portion of the spectrum. I found that they were reflected and refracted in a manner similar to visible light. I call this new kind of light ‘calorific rays’.
