Storyboard Text

  • I am confused. Maybe you can help me since the research is not exact. Should RTI Interventions be taught by Special Education Teachers?
  • Yes they should. Follow me to the next classroom. I have some posters from a training that explain why.
  • RTI
  • The RTI model in schools depends on the collaboration between teachers in order to be successful. Collaboration should occur between gen. ed & special ed. teachers to address teaching, supports, & progress monitoring.
  • In the past Special education teachers taught in a classroom separate from general education. This has changed greatly. Now many special education classrooms work on student inclusion and mainstreaming when appropriate. Gen Ed teachers help our students learn so this needs to be mutual.
  • Those are convincing arguments. So how can they be involved.
  • “rely on whole-school approaches & multi-tiered instruction”- Whole school approach means ALL teachers- This includes students who are at risk not just those who are eligible for special ed. services.
  • Role of Special Educators:
  • 1. Collaborate: Meet at least monthly with MTSS team.
  • 2. Offer expertise with goal setting, selecting evidence based interventions & intensive instruction & behaviors.
  • 3. Help select assessments, interpret results & next steps.
  • 4. Assist with Tier 3 interventions
