Ulysses S. Grant was elected as president in 1868.
He then ratified the 15th Amendment.
In 1876, Rutherford B. Hayes ran against Samuel J. Tilden for the presidency. Hayes was with the Republican party and Tilden with the Democratic.
Hayes lost the popular vote, but won the electoral vote, which made Tilden one vote short of winning. This occurred because 20 of the electoral votes were disputed. They then voted and Hayes ended up winning.
