Madam Loisel was born to be poor. "She suffered..feeling that all the attributes of a gracious life should have been her's." She married a common man and lives a common life. Always feeling sorry for herself.
One day, her husband tried to cheer her up by bringing home and invitation to a party. She instantly got upset. "I haven't a thing to wear." She cried out. She asked for some money and set out to buy a new dress.
After she bought her dress, she went to a longtime friend to borrow some of her jewels. When she tried one necklace one, she fell in love with it. "Her hands trembled as she picked it up." She asked her friend to borrow it and the friend agreed. Then she was on her way to the party.
After a night of luxury, when Madam returned home, she realized that the necklace was missing! When Mr. Loisel went to look, "He had found nothing." They put out a reward for the necklace
They had to buy a replacement which cost them all their money and then some. "It took us ten years to pay it.." They had to move into a small house.
One day, Loisel saw her friend walking down the street and saw her old friend. She told her of the struggle of trying to pay off the replacement necklace. Her friend gave her a shocked look and said "Mine was a false! It was worth five hundred frances at most!"
