After American Revolution, People lost their jobs and economic activity slowed down
Many farmers were greatly impacted by this depression. They were in very difficult situation because they couldn't pay for their debt.
To make the matter more worse, the state of Massachusetts raised the taxes. If farmers could not pay the taxes, the state threatened their farm or throw in jail. In 1786, Daniel Shays, a former Patriot soldier who fought at Bunker Hill and Saratoga, organized a rebellion. 1,000 farmers took part in this rebellion. They gathered near a courthouse and prevented the state from taking farms from farmers who could not pay their taxes.
The government of Massachusetts had to send militia to drive the farmers away and gave them farms back.
After Shay's Rebellion, many American saw as a sign that the Articles of Confederation did not work effective for The United States of American.
