Conflict:Man vs Society Its man vs society because Della wants to get Jim a really good gift for christmas but has no money, society has made it to be where you have to get someone you live the greatest and best gift they can.
"She had, had many happy hours planning something nice for him"(Henry 2).
Rising Action: The Rising action of the story is when she was counting her money and realized she didn't have that much money. And when the disappointment hit her that she couldn't buy a good gift for Jim.
"There was nothing to do but fall on the bed and cry"(Henry 1).
Climax: The climax of the story is when della gets an idea and runs to Mrs. Sofranie.Hair Articles off all kinds. She runs up the stairs and has Mrs.Sofronie look at her hair and offer her $20 for her hair.
"Twenty Dollars, said Mrs. Sofraine, lifting the hair to feel its weight"(Henry 3).
Resolution: The resolution of the story is when Della and Jim give each other there gifts. They both think they got the best of the best for each other. But they both ended up giving up the one thing they hold dear to them. Then when they realized what the other had done it made them both embarrassed for what they had given up for the other.
Theme: The theme of the story, is that the most expensive gift isn't always the best. This is the theme is because they both got stuff that was on the more expensive side. When really Della could have gotten a coat and gloves for Jim, and Jim could have gotten some other hair clips that weren't so expensive.
