  • James Madison wins the election of 1808 over Federalist candidate Charles Pinckney. Tensions bewteen the US and Britain are rising and the British were seizing american ships. The US stated that if Britain didn’t drop trade restrictions, it would stop importing goods from them. Britain didn’t drop their restrictions, and so the US declared war.
  • Madison Wins!
  • People nicknamed ‘warhawks’ were people who wanted war and mostly came from the west/south. They feared that america’s reputation would be ruined if they didn’t go to war and were angry that the British trade restrictions affected their income.
  • A war is necessary. The British must pay for their decisions.
  • A Shawnee leader named Tecumseh tried to spark native american rebellion to protect their lands. Tecumseh’s troops met american troops (led by William Henry Harrison) at the Tippecanoe river. Some natives ended up fleeing to Canada, which along with their use of British guns, served as evidence that the british were supporting them.
  • Action needs to be taken! We are going to lose our native lands!
  • The american public was not fond of the idea of another war. They called it “Mr. Madison’s War” meaning that he was going to fight it himself without the support of the people. It was difficult for the government to borrow money because bankers in the northeast didn’t support the war, so paying for the war was an obstacle. James Madison ended up sending the military to invade Canada.
  • How am I supposed to pay for a war that no one supports?!
  • Commodore Oliver Perry led american fleets to a victory against the British on Lake Erie. The following year, british troops set fire to the capitol and white house in Washington D.C. The British tried for another victory in Baltimore, but were not successful. A kidnapped lawyer named Francis Scott Key witnessed the battle from a British ship, and wrote “The Star Spangled Banner”, which is now the american national anthem.
  • The Americans will BURN for their mistakes!
  • We must give up. We can't afford another war with the Americans.
  • Federalists met in Hartford, Connecticut to create constitutional amendments that increased New England's political power. General Andrew Jackson had a victory at the Battle of New Orleans, unaware that the British had signed the Treaty of Ghent. This victory caused a huge increase in patriotism and national pride.
