In 1971 in East Germany Erich Honecker became the head of the Communist Party. He used the secret police to rule East Germany for 18 years. By 1989 the people were angry with Honecker and started to leave the country.
The government gave into the pressure of the people and opened the border with the West. Families and friends were able to meet each other for the first time in years. The people from each side of Germany began tearing down the wall so the government ordered that it should be teared down.

East German had their first free elections in March of 1990 and the Christian Democrats got 50 percent of the votes. The Christian Democrats agreed with the political union in West Germany. On October 3, 1990 the reunification of West and East Germany took place.
