The Boer War was fought between the British and Boers (Dutch) in and over South Africa. The Boers wanted to keep the "outsiders" from gaining political rights. It can be considered the first modern war. The British eventually won.

Persia did not have enough capital to develop its own resources, so it sold concessions to other countries to control them. In 1890, Nasir al-Din, the Persian ruler sold a concession to a British company.

This outraged many Persians, including Jamal al-Din Afghani, a leader that supported the modernization of Persia. A boycott began.

The boycott worked and the concession was canceled. However, the government was not able to control the situation. In 1907, Britain and Russia took over.
