The creature finds joy to be in nature like V. He takes comfort to be outside. For a moment he is able to forget his ugliness.
The creature stays in his cave watching the people in the town. He is sad because he wants to be friends with them but since he is different. "I lay on my straw, but I could not sleep. I thought of the occurrences of the day. What chiefly struck me was the gentle manners of these people, and I longed to join them, but dared not."
The creature starts to notice they are unhappy and he isn't sure why. He then finds out they are sad because of their poverty. "They were not entirely happy. The young man and his companion often went apart, and appeared to weep. I saw no cause for their unhappiness, but I was deeply affected by it.
The creature steals food from them until he realizes they're poor. he then goes out in the woods and gets his own food and helps them by cutting firewood for them. "a considerable period elapsed before I discovered one of the causes of the uneasiness of this amiable family: it was poverty."
The creature sees Felix and Agatha communicating with sounds. The creature starts to listen until he starts to learn the language. By degrees, I made a discovery of still greater moment. I found that these people possessed a method of communicating their experience and feelings to one another by articulate sounds.
The creature is afraid to be seen by the people of the town because of the previous treatment. He hates that he's ugly. "How was I terrified when I viewed myself in a transparent pool!
