"If i looked like that i would wear a hood all day!"
August Pullman has been homeschooled his whole life because of his condition, and him making over students scared. Auggies parents now think its a good idea to join a public school. I can't say I always wanted to go to school because that wouldn't be exactly true. 'What I wanted was to go to school, but only if I could be like every other kid going to school."
We did it!
Auggie gets picked on by a mean boy at his school for what his face looks like. Eventually, Auggie meets Jack and Summer who stand up for him. "Why is your hair so long?" Julian said to me. He sounded like he was annoyed. I didn't know what to say, so I just shrugged."Can I ask you a question?" he said. I shrugged again. Didn't he just ask me a question?"What's the deal with your face? I mean, were you in a fire or something?"
On Halloween Auggie walks into his class when he sees Jack and Julian talking. He is in his costume so nobody can recognize him. He hears them talking behind his back, August feels betrayed and doesnt talk to Jack for awhile. "I don't know what Jack said because I walked out of the class without anyone knowing I had been there. My face felt like it was on fire while I walked back down the stairs. I was sweating under my costume. And I started crying."
i love school!
At camp, Auggie and Jack get cornered by some 7th graders who were going to beat them up. Miles then shows up and protect them, which is a surprise because he has bullied him since he moved to the school. Amos looked at me and nodded. "It was cool how you stood your ground, little dude," he said, high-fiving me."Yeah, Auggie," said Miles, high-fiving me, too. "You were like, 'We're littler than you guys'…." "I didn't know what else to say!" I laughed.
Auggie wins the Henry Ward Beecher award, which is a surprise to him. The student all gave him a standing ovation. "'He is the greatest," he finally continued, "whose strength carries up the most hearts by the attraction of his own. Without further ado, this year I am very proud to award the Henry Ward Beecher medal to the student whose quiet strength has carried up the most hearts. So will August Pullman please come up here to receive this award?"
Although auggie struggled a lot with school and friends he ended up liking it and thanking his mom for the decision of going to school. Although his parents were hesitant they felt like it was the right choice in the end. "We can't keep protecting him," Mom whispered to Dad, who was driving. "We can't just pretend he's going to wake up tomorrow and this isn't going to be his reality, because it is, Nate and we have to help him learn to deal with it. We can't just keep avoiding situations that…"
