  • The Silent Barter
  • As a traveler goes along the path with salt, he sees a drum and a pile of gold, left by an African trader. He is determining how much it is worth.
  • The Silent Barter
  • This Will Repeat,
  • Once he has decided, he places an amount of salt on the table and bangs the drum. They hide and wait for the response.
  • The Silent Barter
  • And Repeat,
  • The African will then decide if the amount of salt is worth the amount of gold on the table.
  • The Silent Barter
  • If the Africans think that the amount of gold on the table is not worth the amount of salt, they will add more gold to the trade and bang the drum again and hide.
  • Oh, well then, this tells what I was going to say, It repeats until both sides have agreed.
  • Until Both Sides are Happy.
  • Then they go back "home."
  • After the barter, the groups go their separate ways. That is how you trade without even speaking to each other.
