  • Jackson argued that the Spoils System great for democracy because it allowed the common people to have a chance at government jobs instead of only the wealthy elites or career politicians. He believed that the common man could also be trusted to run such jobs even without training.

  • After the election of 1828, Andrew Jackson started replacing a lot of people in government positions with his supporters. A lot of the people he replaced had been working in their position for years and they were very experienced, but these new people had little to no experience in their position but they were loyal to Jackson and his party. This was known as the spoils system.

  • New acts in place which means new requirements, hope you meet them! You have to inorder be a government official.
  • After Jackson's presidency with the spoils system and other presidents using the same system people began seeing its problems and by the late 1800s people began seeing its problems. The government started a reform of the civil service system using a new act called the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act passed in 1883. This made new requirements for handling a job in the government. After this act, instead of just being loyal to the president, you must actually be REQUIRED to be in the position.
