  • John Quincy Adams' administration passed a protective tariff to support American manufacturing and eliminate foreign competition
  • Initial Issue
  • South Carolina's Perspective
  • The tariff only benefited the  industrial North manufacturing the products.
  • John C. Calhoun sided with the people of South Carolina and was sent by them to represent the South and to talk about the tariff with Jackson.

  • Andrew Jackson Perspective
  • Supported Congress. Congress approved of the tariff. The South didn't agree with Jackson or the Congress.
  • Henry Clay came up with the Compromise Tariff of 1833 to help out with the crisis.

  • Eventually, the South accepted the new tariff but nullified the Force Bill. Both sides claimed victory and the issue was put to rest.
