  • Methaphor
  • Simile
  • Rhyme
  • ¨And a huge black hulk, that was magnified¨(3) This is a metaphor because a metaphor is a comparison to something without using like or as. And the ship is compared to a ¨huge black hulk¨ and like or as are not used making it a metaphor.
  • Hyperbole
  • ¨Across the moon like a prison bar¨(3) The definition of a simile is a comparison using like or as. In this quote the ship crossing the ocean is compared to a prison bar. And the authors says like a prison bar making it a simile.
  • Personification
  • ¨Listen my children and you shall hear Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere, On the eighteenth of April, in seventy-five; Hardly a man is now alive Who remembers that famous day and year.¨(1) This is a rhyme because the last word of each line is a rhyme.
  • symbolism
  • ¨A phantom ship, with each mast and spar¨(3) A hyperbole is an exaggeration. This is an exaggeration of how quiet and hard to see the ship was. And they refer to it as a phantom ship which is an exaggeration.
  • ¨And felt the breath of the morning breeze.¨(11) Personification is when the author describes what an object is doing as if it were human. The breeze cant actually breath but humans can so its personification.
  • ¨And so through the night went his cry of alarm¨(13) This is symbolism because alarm is actually a symbol for his voice and not an actual alarm.
