The Aztec Empire was one of the most powerful empires that was located in Central Mexico and lasted from 1300 to 1521 CE. In 1502, Moctezuma became the ruler of the Aztecs ruling over 5 million people.
Hmmm... is he a threat to this empire or should I treat him with respect?
In 1519, a Spanish conquistador named Hernán Cortés came with other Spanish soldiers to Central Mexico in hopes of find gold and other riches.
When the Spanish conquistador made it to Central Mexico, they were surprised to find this great empire. Word spread among the Aztec people of the men who have come in large canoes.
When Moctezuma and Hernán Cortés met, Moctezuma wasn't sure if he should welcome him or not. Historians say that Moctezuma might have confused Hernán for a God.
In the end, Moctezuma decided to welcome him to his empire and gave him and his soldiers many gifts.
This was a mistake, however, and Hernán Cortés, with the help of his soldiers and many neighboring tribes who were enimies of the Aztec, where able to conquer the Aztec Empire.
