The Story of Buddhism
The astrologers said that Siddhartha Gautama, born to the king and queen, would either become a spiritual leader or a great ruler.
My son must be a great ruler! I have to protect him from seeing suffering. He will be kept in the palace walls at all times!
Siddhartha Gautama married and had a son. He lived the perfect life. He could never see suffering.
My son will never want to leave! He has never seen suffering, so the Gautama legacy will live on!
One day, Siddhartha's father permitted him to go outside. His father cleared the streets of anyone who wasn't healthy. However, he saw a sick man, an old man, and a dead man.
Siddhartha left his wife, child, and whole privileged life behind. He shaved his head and dressed in a poor man's clothes. He set out to find the answer to suffering. He asked many ascetics and monks, but he still didn't understand.
Finally, he settled under a tree to meditate for three days. Then, he realized the Four Noble Truths and created the Eightfold Path. He became the Buddha and strove to teach others what he had learned. When he died upon 80, he achieved Nirvana.
