Jonas is an 11 year old boy that is now soon to be a 12. He lives in a family of 5 (including himself), his mom, dad, sister Lily and little baby brother named Gabe. Jonas and his family live in a community were it is very controlled and set to be as perfect as possible.
In the ceremony of the 12's, Jonas was not called up to receive his job. He was called down last but he was given the one of the rarest jobs in his community. His job was to receive the real world memory's and to now finally see color. The only other person that can see color is the older receiver.
Since Jonas has received the job of a receiver the Giver must give his memory's of the people outside of the community to Jonas. For example: sledding down a snowy hill, breaking his leg, war, and family. And all of these memory's that he had received, he had never seen before
The Giver soon began to give Jonas more "harsher' memories of death and pain, more so than more happier memories. Later on after the memories, Jonas had insisted that he saw the release of the newborn baby to see what they really did when the "released" someone. He was shocked when he saw what they would do to people and baby's. So he had made a decision that would change the point of view for everyone about their community
Gabe was not a fast learner with speaking and walking, because of this they were going to release him the next day, so Jonas leaves the community with Gabe to spare Gabe's life and to allow the community to see all of the Giver's memory of happiness, anger, death and pain. Along their journey of leaving, Jonas began to notice a plane flying by once every day and once every night. This plane had a heat sensor inside to detect any sort of heat. So Jonas would give the memory of snow to himself and Gabe to make one another cold.
Days later it began to rain, get colder, then snow. Jonas did not know how to to prepare for such cold weather, so both him and Gabe began to get sick and cold. It had been so long ever since the last time he had saw the plane, around the end the end of Jonas's journey to leave the community. He began to feel numb, but he began to hear music, laughter and a light in the distance and his hopes were once again restored.
