Yoko's message was what it was like for a Japanese family who was living in Korea trying to escape. It helped us realize how dangerous it was and how many people got injured or killed.
Ko showed courage and survival when she had to shave her head to make her look like boy. Once she did that the Korean men did not think she was a girl and did not try to rape her.
Hideyo showed courage and survival when the Korean Communist Army came to the factory and started killing and capturing the Japanese. Hideyo took some of his friend's blood and put it on himself to make himself look dead so he can escape.
Yoko showed courage when she was getting bullied at her school. She knew the girls were going to make fun of her but she came to school anyways and continued working hard.
Mother showed courage by going to find her parents and leaving Ko and Yoko at the train station so they could go to school.
