  • James Jacobi and John Kearns
  • A meeting had been set up a week later on a set of hills. Gathering in the town was not safe because Fascist soldiers crawled the streets. During discussions, soldiers appeared.
  • Papa, can you tell me about your life during and after the Holocaust? I have a school project about someone I admire.
  • I was born in Turin, Italy in July 1919; just after the end of WWII. But you know that already. It all began when I chose to attend the University of Turin to study Chemistry in 1937.
  • Of course but it was a long and sad part of my life.
  • During my studies in Turin, the Fascist Party enacted race laws against all Jews.
  • I was caught, and so were the rest of them.
  • Can you believe this? I feel like this won't even be the worst thing they enforce. I would never had thought it would come to this.
  • The Nuremberg Laws - Marriage between Jews and Aryans' is banned - Sex between Jews and Aryans' is illegal - Jews are not allowed to be Reich citizens or to vote- Jews are defined in law by 'race', not religion
  • The Nuremberg Laws Anyone with three or four Jewish grandparents is considered to be a Jew; people with two Jewish grandparents are considered to be Jews if they are also part of the Jewish religious community, or if they are married to a Jew.
  • Primo, we should all gather at night and share our concerns. It is probably not the best idea to group during the daylight.
  • Agreed. Us Jewish men have to stick together if we want to graduate. I know of other Jews who feel the same way.
  • I heard about an anti-Fascist resistance beginning to form in the town. The authorities are not aware of it since it's against the law now.
  • A couple of days after I had seen the laws myself, a group of Jewish men gathered to discuss the concerns and precautions we had to start taking.
  • After I was captured in 1943, I was sent to Auschwitz in 1944 where my life changed forever.
  • Even though this is very dangerous, I agree with Luca. Any chance we have at stopping this is by joining the resistance. Things will only get worse if we don't.
  • We should join their resistance and try to stop these laws any further. Set up a meeting with them so all of us can discuss future acions.
  • Agreed!
  • One of the German soldiers understood us and they began to shout and run after us.
  • How'd they know about this meeting?
  • I don't know but better split.
  • Hey guys, those are soldiers. We better get out of here.
  • In accordance to the Nuremberg Laws, you're under arrest and will be sent to a camp for working with an anti-Nazi resistance.
  • Please I beg of you, don't do this! I have a family!
  • HEY, SHUT UP!
  • Adonai, have mercy on me. Watch over me for I do not know the next step in my journey. I am scared and fear death. I do not want to die. I just want to live.
