Storyboard Text

  • In recent years, YouTube and many other media outlets have made teen pregnancy a popular plot point. This has lead to a glorification of the issue that does not pair well with the USA's lack of comprehensive sex education
  • Youtube.com
  • "14 and Pregnant - My Story"
  • Media is now the primary source of sex education for teenagers. This has been on the rise since the 1980's with MTV but now many TV shows and movies discuss teen pregnancy without discussing the negative consequences.
  • Abstinence Only Education is what is taught in most schools. Comprehensive sex education would talk about contraception, STIs, and LGBT perspectives; things that abstinence only education does not discuss. This is bad because students are not learning enough in formal settings to make safe decision. Instead, they are learning from media.
  • Abstinence-Only Education vs Comprehensive Sex Education
  • There has been no change in federally mandated sex education curriculum since the 1950's. Some states have adopted comprehensive sex ed, but many still rely on abstinence-only education. Mandated change must be implemented to give teenagers the appropriate education ot learn and avoid the consequences of teen pregnancy.
  • The lack of education in schools means kids are learning about teen pregnancy from shows like 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom. 16 & Prgenant had some true educational discussion of risks, but Teen Mom glorified teen pregnancy. This likely caused a small spike in teen pregnancies in the USA during 2008. School's should educate on teen pregnancy and ways to avoid it so students do not see these TV shows as normal examples or easy life paths.
  • Teen Mom
  • 16 & Pregnant
  • Kids should be learning comprehensive sex education in schools so they do not think that teen pregnancies are normal. YouTube and Hollywood glamorize the issue without discussing the real consequences associated with it. Teen Pregnancy rates would fall dramatically if the USA mandated comprehensive sex education in schools.
