In West Africa, the earliest communities consisted of family-based communities. These extended families had 15-20 people living with them and working on the same farm.
Every family member had a specific task that they had to complete. When they accomplished all the necessary needs of a community, they traded amongst themselves and other communities.
Over time, family-based communities produced the food they needed to survive and grew to a population of 100 to 200 people. Some of the communities bonded together to form small villages.
