  • I'm not doing this stupid assignment
  • You seem upset. Is everything ok?
  • I'm just gonna fail
  • Emily enters Mrs. Jackson's 8th grade English class and is visibly upset. She is wearing her sweatshirt with the hood up and ignores Mrs. Jackson when she greets her at the door.
  • Why do you think that you are going to fail?
  • I tried really hard in Science but I failed my test
  • Emily sits in her chair, resting her elbows on the desk, with her head in her hands, facing the ground. When Mrs. Jackson passes out the day's classwork Emily crumples up her paper. She remains withdrawn from the class
  • I understand why you would feel discouraged
  • Mrs. Jackson recognizes that Emily is dealing with some external issues and calmly approaches her, asking permission to sit and talk with her.
  • Why don't we get back to class?
  • sure, thanks
  • Mrs. Jackson identified and acknowledged Emily's emotions. She then learns that Emily is upset about failing a science test earlier in the day.
  • Mrs. Jackson assures Emily that she understands why she feels upset, letting her know it's okay to be disappointed.
  • Mrs. Jackson offers Emily a few minutes to relax in the hallway then offers to help her get started on the current assignment
