Storyboard Text

  • "This you did by your wisdom" (1).
  • "Tell us , you villain" (3).
  • "This day will show you your birth and it will destroy you" (4).
  • In this scene, Oedipus is able to answer the Sphinx's riddle correctly when no one else was able to. This shows he is a tragic hero by noble disposition.
  • "As I hear this from you I could go mad" (6).
  • This quote shows one of Oedipus' fatal flaws: ignorance. Having a fatal flaw is a characteristic of a tragic hero. In the end, it leads to his demise. By not being able to see that the woman he marries is his mother, it leads him to claw his own eyes out.
  • "He's captain of our ship and he is frightened" (7).
  • Tiresias is foreshadowing that if Oedipus learns the truth about his past, then he will suffer a reversal of fortune. Having everything at one point in his life and then losing it is a characteristic of a tragic hero.
  • Jocasta asks Oedipus to stop investigating his lineage/ ancestry (8)
  • Oedipus realizes that his wife, Jocasta, could be his mother. Realizing the consequence of his action is another characteristic of a tragic hero.
  • Jocasta is describing how Oedipus is acting scared. Her description of Oedipus moves the audience to pity and fear him. Such catharsis is another common trait of a tragic hero.
  • This quote shows the theme of truth. Jocasta has learned that Oedipus is her son, and now she is trying to prevent him from knowing the truth.
