Shane Burcaw was diagnosed with SMA at 9 months old. This means his muscles are slowly deteriorating over time, and he would be in a wheel chair for the rest of his life.
Shane never let his disability get in his way. He always found other ways to modify thing so he could play with his friends.
Shane never really felt all that different until he started middle school. he had trouble moving his wheelchair through the crowded halls and felt like everyone was watching him.
Shane eventually learned to survive middle school though. He did things like all the other kids like going to school dances and parties.
In middle school however, Shane attended camp for disabled kids. He realized most of these kids had never had normal social lives like him. Shane always got through life using humor, something these kids didn't understand.
In 9th grade, Shane ran for class president using a very interesting method to win his votes: humor. His speech made fun of himself while also capturing the hearts of his fellow classmates. He won by a lanslide.
