An unbelievably large marlin passes beneath Santiago's boat and he prepares to catch it.
At the conclusion of the long struggle with the Marlin Santiago emerges victorious and ties the marlin to his boat.
Sharks begin to feed on the Marlin as it is tied to Santiago's boat and he can not stop them from eating away all but bone.
Santiago returns to the port with only the skeleton of the marlin but is praised for catching a fish that had such a large skeleton.
