"[His eyes] slant downward at an extreme angle, almost like diagonal slits that someone cut into his face, and the left one is noticeably lower than the right one"(88).
“Kinder than is necessary. Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed"(225).
Characterization August Pullman is a very shy person, due to his condition. During his school year, he proved himself there's nothing to be afraid of. “I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives"(316).
Well isn't this just great
Imagery Auggie doesn't really like describing himself. He knows people think he's from another planet or something, so he wears his astronaut helmet.
"Ohh, Auggie, don't be mad. I'm sorry. I just couldn't stand seeing wear that thing on your head anymore, you know? I didn't think it was good for you"(291).
Theme In wonder, the main theme is choose kindness. Why bully someone just because you don't look the same, or "ugly." If bullied, another theme is courage. Auggie knows he's different but that doesn't stop him from living his life.
Palacio, R. J. Wonder. Puffin, 2017.
Foreshadowing Before Daisy, the Pullmans dog dies, he shows many signs that he's sick and basically, dying. "And I wondered how it would feel to be in heaven someday and not have my face matter anymore.Just like it never, ever mattered to Daisy"(227).
Symbolism Helmet. Auggie's favorite thing he has given by Miranda, Via's best friend. His helmet keeps him from showing his insecurity of his face. He basically can't live without it, until, he loses it, (his dad actually threw it away). He now knows he can live without it.
