"Men and girls came and went like moths" shows that Gatsby's party guests are there because they are attracted to the light, they are attracted to the idea of Jay Gatsby's exaggerated parties.
The library scene gives the reader the first insight that Gatsby may not be the person we expect him to be. The books in his library look real at first glance, however the pages have nothing on them and the books are empty. This may symbolise that Gatsby is normal from the outside but he is empty and hollow from the inside
During the party, Nick meets a man who tells him "you look familiar", so they start chatting about how they were both in the war. Nick goes on to tell the man that Mr Gatsby is his neighbour but that he has never met him. The man tells him that he is Gatsby
Chapter 3 conveys that everyone judges Gatsby but nobody knows who he really is. Even Nick who is a smart person says " I expected that Mr Gatsby would be a florid and corpulent person in his middle ages". This shows that everyone has an image of Gatsby but no one really knows him.
"But no one swooned backward on Gatsby, and no French bob touched Gatsby's shoulder, and no singing quartets were formed with Gatsby's head for one link" This quote emphasises how lonely Gatsby is and how uninterested he is in getting involved with his parties.
"Don't give it another thought, old sport. The familiar expression held no more familiarity than the hand which reassuringly brushed my shoulder ". This quote shows that Gatsby is trying to become familiar with Nick to become friends with him. However, Nick is not falling for Gatsby's tricks as he states that the remark was unfamiliar.
