In Pennsylvania in 1794, a group of farmers attacked a federal court marshal who was attempting to arrest a man who refused to pay the whiskey tax. They tarred and feathered him and others.
President Washington offered the rebels amnesty if they would pay the tax from now on. The rebels refused and George Washington sent an army of 13,000 men. Most of the rebels were arrested.
