Benjamin Franklin Norris (Frank Norris) was born in 1870 in Chicago Illinois.
He was the first important naturalist writer in the U.S
He studied painting in Paris for 2 years before deciding that he aspired to be a writer.
He was also a news corespondent in South Africa.
He was a war correspondent in Cuba for McClure's Magazine in 1898.
McTeague
His first important novel was McTeague. It was a naturalist work set in San Francisco about a brutal dentist who dies in Death Valley.
His most important works, The Octopus and The Pit, were about the distribution and consumption of wheat.
They also talked about the struggle of American wheat farmers going against monopolistic railroad corporations.
After his death in 1902 at age 32, his novels gave many people insight on Californian life in the turn of the 20th century.
His works were made into many plays and operas. They were also rewritten and McTeague was even turned into a film.
