Chapter 5: Captain John Smith
8th grade social studies.
I just arrived from England and two-thirds of my men died. I expect the Indian tribes to trade and give goods.
Captain john Smith and the men arrive in Virginia. And John Smith was a prisoner for a long period of time, but then he is finally invited to take his place on the ruling council.
John Smith travels to Indian towns to trade for food. The indian towns give John Smith heaps of corn, fish, oysters, venison, turkeys, geese, and bread.
Later, John Smith is captured by Powhatan a powerful leader. Powhatan decides to have J ohn Smith executed. Then Powhatan's daughter saves John Smith by putting her head over his. Then Powhatan decides to spare John Smith's life.
John Smith was free. When he returns to Jamestown people try to escape back to England. He has them stopped. In return, they try to have him hanged. That very night a supply ship returns from England, and the ships captain, Christopher Newport, stops the hanging.
John and his men head out to sail again. Over the next two days, the men cover about 100 miles (161 kilometers)and reach as far as today's Baltimore.
Years later he finds a new part of the world. New England which is what is still called now In 2006, the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic water Trail was established - reminding us how important exploration is.
