Nationalism and the Rise of Alliances
WWI began when Gavrilo Princip shot and killed the Arch Duke Francis Ferdinand and his family on the streets of Sarajevo, Bosnia.
Germany and the Austro Hungarian Empire was mad at Bosnia, whom Russia sided with. AH and Ger. declared war with Russia, but France and GB came to help
During this time nations were becoming more patriotic and this caused a lot of tensions but with these tensions came mutual trust or alliances, a formal agreement or treaty between two or more nations to cooperate for specific purposes, to help each other. Russia was allies with Great Britain and France, known as the Allied Powers, while Germany was allied with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and called themselves the Central Alliance.
