El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in South America. The capital of El Salvador is San Salvador which has a population of 1.5 million.
In 1821 El Salvador declared its independence from Spain. In 1881 the right to share land was banned. This meant that a few powerful people could control coffee platations, it was the biggest income.
Corrupt Place to Live
In 1929, a world wide financial crisis led to a drop in coffee prices. Greedy plantation owners didnt harvest their crops. This led to peasant farmers to starve. The selfish decision made sparked outrage and major protests. The protests were destroyed, with up to 30,000 deaths in a few weeks.
Actions Threatened the Rich...
The uprising of peasant farmers in 1929 resulted in the creation of military regimes, which lasted up to 50 years, many people died because they sought basic reforms and civil rights, which were continually denied to them.
El Salvador became an extrememly corrupt place to live. The military oppressed genuine and correct protests and rallies. They stopped the poor people, who were denied justice, equality or fairness by beating, murdering or imprisoning them.
When the actions of peasants threatened the position of the rich families, the military, who were often governed by these rich families through bribes, were 'called in' to get rid of the problem. Punishments imposed by the military include: Beatings, torture, people 'disappearing' and public executions.
