  • An old pirate named Kidd allegedly buried a large sum of treasure, it is rumored that the devil guards this treasure.
  • A poor, miserable man named Tom Walker found an old Indian fort, in which he dug up a cloven skull, with an Indian tomahawk buried deep in it when he encounters a man named Old Scratch.
  • Old Scratch told Tom Walker that he could make him rich through Kidd's treasure which he protects but at a cost.
  • Tom's wife went to the forest to claim the reward for herself and died while Tom showed up and agreed to be a usurer in exchange for the devil's treasure.
  • Tom grew rich acting as the devil's usurer yet later felt doubt about his promise trying anything to get out of his deal always carrying a bible with him, becoming a devout Christian, and shouting prayers in church.
  • After a time the devil came to Tom's estate and took him away on his horse.
