"The bravest and best of the Geat, fourteen In all, and led them down to their boat; He knew the sea, would point the prow straight to that distant Danish shore."
Battle of Grendel.
¨ He twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle and bone split and broke, the battle was over.¨
Honor from King Hrothgar.
¨My Lord, the Great King of the Danes, commands me to tell you that he knows of your noble birth and that having come to him from over the open sea you have come bravely and are welcome.¨
Beowulf, along with a group of Geatish warriors, sails across the sea to the land of the Danes to fight the demon Grendel.
Grendel's Mother Attacks.
When Grendel attacks Heorot Hall, Beowulf meets him in hand-to-hand combat. Beowulf tears Grendel's arm from his socket, mortally wounding the monster.
Tracking Grendel's Mother.
Beowulf is thanked by King Hrothgar, who bestows rich gifts on him and hosts a feast in his honor.
" The brilliant light shone, suddenly, as though burning in that hall, as bright as Heaven's own candle, lit in the sky. He looked at her home, then following along the wall went walking, his hands tight on the sword and anger still in his heart. "
Beowulf goes to sleep after the feast, but in his absence, Heorot is attacked again by Grendel's mother.
¨ Grendel's monster mother, in grief for her son, next attacks Herot, and in her dripping claws carries off one man- Hrothgar's closest friend. "
He tracks Grendel's mother to her lair in a cave under a lake and kills her with a massive, magic sword he finds there.
"He caught her in the neck and cut it through, broke bones and all, her body fell."
"Then he saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy sword, hammered by giants strong and blessed with their magic."
Beowulf returns to the surface with Grendel's head and the hilt of the sword that killed Grendel's mother.
