  • Dred Scott was born a slave in Virginia around 1800. His owner. Peter Blow, moved to Alabama and then to St. Louis in 1830
  • After Blow died in 1833, Scott was sold to Dr. John Emerson, an army surgeon.
  • In 1836, Emerson and his slaves moved to Wisconsin. There, Scott met and married his wife, Harriet Robinson.
  • After Dr. Emerson died in 1843, Emerson's wife bought ownership of the Scotts. Dred offered Emerson money for their freedom. She refused.
  • The Scotts sued Mrs. Emerson in 1847 and managed to bring the case to the Supreme Court. The odds were not in his favor.
  • Scott lost the case, and Emerson's brother, John Sanford claimed ownership of the slaves and brought them to New York where they lived the rest of their lives.
