Hi my name is Wally and I'm a water molecule!! I'm living in Pittock Lake with all my friends Steve, Steph, Steven, Stephen, and Daniel!!!
This is Wally again and I have been pumped out of Pittock Lake and I am now in the collection process!! This is the first step of the water purification where large particles and debris are removed by traveling screens as water is entering the treatment plant!!!!! I've made it this far and I still have a long way to go!!
We made it to the second stage!!! This stage contains coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation. Coagulation is the process of rapidly mixing chemicals known as coagulants with us to make small particles to clump together. Flocculation is the gentle mixing to form a light, fluffy, flocculent precipitate, called floc.During sedimentation the floc settles very slowly, sinking and carrying suspended particles with it and thereby clearing the water. Time to head to the Filtration Stage!!!!
WHOOOOHOO!!! And we are at the filtration stage! The filters we are in are made up of graded gravel (grey), fine sand (yellow) and carbon or anthracite (black). The sand layer is removing the remaining floc, algae, and silt. Other chemical and physical impurities and most of the biological impurities (bacteria, etc.) are being removed. The carbon or anthracite layer has removed taste and odour producing chemical from the water. OMG we might have lost Daniel along the way!!!!! :(((((
DANIEL IS BACK!!!!!!! And I am now at the Disinfection stage! This is when chlorine is added to me and my friends to kill the microorganism's alongside us which is known as pre-chlorination. Alternate disinfectants include ozone, carbon dioxide, ammonia, potassium permanagate, and even ultra violet light. We have made it past the second stage of the water purification!!! Hopefully Daniel is holding out alright!
We are almost half way done!!! We made it to the Aeration stage!! This is where other substances (such as air, ozone, or oxygen, "activated" charcoal, ammonia, chlorine dioxide or potassium permanganate) may be mixed with us to reduce taste and colour problems!!! We are far on our way though the water purification process!!!!
