The sound of the old man´s heart becomes louder and louder, but then he is murdered by the narator, who feels safe afterwards. The reason for the murder is that he is affraid of neighbours being able to hear the loudly beating heart.
He dismembers the body after he killed him. Three policemen arrive at the door, because a neighbour heared the old man´s scream. The narrator still feels safe. He invites them in.
While the murderer and the policeman are talking, the old man´s heart starts to beat again and the sound grows louder and louder. The narrator thinks the policemen are able to hear it too.
