Whites and non whites were segregated socially. Non whites worked at low paying manual jobs. They had less opportunities for education then whites
Non whites dennounced English speaking whites that dominated the government. They critizied laws that told them where too eat and where to live. They disagreed with how much land was given to whites versus non whites. Even though Africans made up 75% of the population they only got 13% of land.
In the 1950's the non whites started protesting the Apartheid laws. South African government responded by firing at peaceful demonstrators. More than 60 people died and many more were wounded. The south African government arrested the leaders of the protest, charged them with treason, and put them in jail.
WE NEED MORE LAND!
Other leaders like Tutu and Biko spoke out against the apartheid and lost their lives for it. Some white South Africans joined the anti apartheid movement. The government passed laws that made all black students learn the Afrikaan language. Some black school students in Soweto were protesting peacefully when police shot them and killed hundreds.
In the 1980's the government began to retreat from its harsh apartheid laws and policies. New government laws gave non whites more of a political voice but not political participation. Pressure from the international community forced the aouth African government to change its laws.
