  • In February, Helen contracts scarlet fever or meningitis and becomes deaf and blind at the age of 19 months.
  • Begins her studies at Radcliffe College (now part of Harvard University) in September

  • On June 1, Helen dies a weeks before her 88th birthday at her home in Connecticut.
  • An American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree. One of the most famous deaf people in history, she is an idol to many deaf people in the world.
