Esperanza and her family move to Mango Street. She has lived in many places and wants to live in a house that she is proud of but this place still does not meet her expectations.
Esperanza soon makes friends with two girls named Lucy and Rachel. They bought a bike together and shared its use.
Esperanza and her friends, Rachel and Lucy, got a bag of old high-heels from a neighbor's cousin. They ran around the neighborhood in them and got some unexpected attention from creepy old men. They were not upset when their mothers found the high heels shoes later and threw them away.
Esperanza begs her mother to let her eat lunch at school. Her mother writes her a note, but the principal does not allow it because Esperanza lives too close to the school. When the principal assumes that Esperanza lives in the run-down tenement building, Esperanza feels humiliated and cries. The principal lets her eat lunch at the school for one day.
Esperanza's mother buys her a new party dress to wear for her cousin's baptism but forgets to buy her new shoes. Esperanza is forced to wear her ugly school shoes. She is ashamed to dance because of her shoes. Her uncle convinces her to dance, and she begins to have so much fun that she forgets all about her old shoes.
