In 6th grade, my family spent Christmas with my grandparents. While we were there my mom got sick, really sick. Her back started hurting and soon she was having trouble walking.
I watched my mom go to doctor after doctor, but they couldn’t fix the problem. She became disabled and had to stay in bed all the time.
At first, it was really hard for my family to adjust. We used to rely on my mom for everything, but suddenly things were different and my little brother and I were expected to grow up fast.
It wasn’t all bad though. I became extremely independent a lot more responsible. From a young age I learned how to do laundry, make dinner, and navigate the grocery store like a pro.
My family has become very close over the years & have learned to lean on each other for support. I will never take family for granted & always appreciate the good times we have together.
This experience has completely changed my outlook on life. It taught me compassion and sensitivity. I use this experience to help me empathize with other families and individuals dealing with disabilities.
