Slavery impacted the North and South greatly, causing major tension between them because they could not agree on what to do. The North wanted to give the slaves their rightly deserved freedom, but the South wanted to keep them as slaves and pushed for it to stay that way. This started to cause irruptions and disagreements that soon led to war.
In the year of 1849, the Underground Railroad network provided escape routes for slaves. This gave them hope that there was a life for them after slaving away for so long.
Battle of Appomattox
During the month of March in 1852, Uncle Tom's Cabin was published. This caused a lot of problems with the South because they were so angry with what it stood for. It was an anti-slavery novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
On November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected as the United States' President and on March 4, 1861 Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated.
On April 9, 1865 The war will end with the Battle of Appomattox and Lee will surrender to Grant. By the time Lee surrendered he had 10,000 soldiers.
Abraham Lincoln had come up with the Ten Percent Plan which allows state citizens to swear allegiance to the Union and agree to accept the end of slavery. The Republicans' Plan give full citizenship and right to vote. Andrew Johnson's Plan gave amnesty to whites who signed loyalty oaths and there weren't roles for freed blacks or the ability to vote.
