  • Why will you say I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses not destroyed nor dulled them. I heard all things in heaven and in the earth. I had also heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? Hearken! and observe how calmly I tell you the whole story
  • I cannot kill the old man I have no reason to kill him. If only his evil eye was open. I would have solved this with such sagacity.

  • Finally I am free of the of the derision of the evil eye. The eye shall no longer haunt me!!
  •  The narrator tries to convince the reader that he is not mad and now proceeds to tell the story to the reader. The story is in his perspective.
  • Im so happy we get a break after this long night.
  • The heart I hear it. It is so dreadfully loud. The cops might hear it.
  • The narrator cannot bring himself to kill the old man because his evil eye is closed and he must await for it  to open so he can complete his plan.
  • This encounter has left me vexed!
  • I confess I killed the old man, now please make the heartbeat stop! I beg you!!
  • What?!? How could this be? You treated us so nicely.
  •  The narrator finally commits the crime and he feels relieved he no longer has to deal with the evil eye.
  • The narrator feels guilty about the killing the old man and that is the heartbeat he hears.
  • The narrator has broken down due to mental illness and the guilt of killing the old man. He has confessed his crimes.
