In 1968 Czechoslovakia's reform movement was ended by the soviet's troops. People used their writing and repression to gain power and oppose the government. Soon mass demonstrations took place.
The communist government collapsed in December of 1989. This gave room for Vaclav Havel to become the new president. He became a very well spokes person for their democracy.
With this new government, Czechoslovakia faced old ethnic problems. This was the cause in a peaceful separation of the Czechs and Solvaks. These eventually became their own individual countries. Havel became president of the Czech Republic and Michal Kovac became president of Slovakia.
